It’s bootie season…hands down one of my favorite times of year. I absolutely adore boots, so much that a few years back my husband started singing to me: “I love my boots, my boots and me, they help me swing from tree to tree…” Anyone who’s had a child in the last 15 years knows this jingle by heart from Dora the Explorer. My family teased me by calling me “Boots,” Dora’s red boot wearing pet monkey, due to my obsession. Guilty as charged.
The last couple of years, however I have to say booties have become my new love. ♥
First, booties are so versatile. They can be worn year around, not just in the fall or winter. Booties are not as hot as boots, and with San Diego having longer and longer summers, and full blown heat waves in the fall, tall boots are sometimes just not at all practical. I’ve had friends ask me lately for some ideas on how to wear booties, so I decided this would make a great blog post. And…it gives me the opportunity to share some of my favorite booties.
My Favorite Bootie Picks this Season
I love the split shaft on this bootie; it draw attention to the ankle, which is feminine and sexy. This gray suede color is fantastic and so “in” right now. It goes with literally everything and can be dressed up or dressed down. I use to wear only black booties whenever I wore black skinny jeans, but now I’m loving grey or taupe with black jeans because they actually stand out against black jeans and become more of the “statement piece” of my outfit.
These are hands down my favorite bootie of all time and are one of the few picks that I actually own. I absolutely love these booties and wear them constantly. The heel height is perfect making them easy to wear all day long. The sleek design makes them great for a casual day look, and chic enough for work or even a night out. I also love the ankle detail, where there is a slightly shorter height right at the ankle. It’s a subtle detail but really makes the bootie more feminine. Sam Edelman has been making this bootie for a few seasons now and has caught on to the demand offering it in other versatile colors like tobacco and black. They’re also on sale right now at Nordstrom for only $99, which is a steal for such a classic bootie.
No way can I write a post about boots or booties and not include the UGG boot, especially this newly designed spin on their original classic boot. This style is really a cross between a bootie and a boot because you can wear it both ways – as pictured like a boot, or rolled down once as a bootie. Genius! I also love the slimmer design on the toe and forefoot, which creates a much sleeker look. The “Amie” is actually even more comfortable than the classic UGG boot because it hugs your foot. It’s like having your feet surrounded by the coziest, warmest pillow. On cold, crisp mornings, I snuggle my feet into these fluffy warm bootie clouds from the moment I wake up.
Black booties are a wardrobe staple – they really take an outfit up a notch especially when paired with black tights and a short dress. I love to take a summery dress from my closet and “winterize” it by adding dark colored or black tights and black booties (see looks below). This monochormatic scheme elongates the leg and plays double duty on spring and summer clothes. Total win-win.
I Love My Booties..Now How Do I Style Them!?!
Booties can be worn so many different ways and are best when the detail of the bootie is accentuated, like with cropped jeans, ankle jeans, skirts, dresses, or even shorts. They still look great with a full length skinny jean, but sometimes the cute factor gets lost in the leg of the jean.
One particular look that is in style this year is a shorter dress (knee length or just above the knee), long open cardigan, and booties. It’s effortless, classic and modern all at the same time. I also like to change things up and wear this outfit with a textured pair of socks scrunched down at the ankle so just a bit of the socks are visible. It keeps my feet toasty, adds another layer to the look, and a little pop of color too.
It’s fun to think outside the box and pair booties with shorts, a cute tee, and sweater, jacket or even a blazer. This makes for an easy weekend outfit for hitting up a farmer’s market, catching a matinee movie, grabbing lunch with friends, or even just running errands. It’s one of those, why not situations. Why not wear booties with shorts? As long as it’s not being worn to the office or in an otherwise dressy setting, it’s totally hip and pushes the fashion envelope in a fresh way.
When wearing booties with jeans there are a few options to make the booties shine. Right now I like to wear my booties with a raw hem ankle jean that makes it easy for me to showcase my booties. I also wear some of favorite skinny jeans and just roll them a bit at the ankle. I try not to roll them too perfectly because I like the “messy” rolled look better than a neat one. That’s just me though – both look great with booties. Rolling up the jeans a bit shows a bit of the ankle, which adds just a little sexy to the outfit.
Booties look amazing with skirts; I don’t have to worry about cuffing or rolling up my jeans with skirts. Ankles, and therefore booties, are showcased naturally. I love this look below because the skirt is a little on the longer side but it’s not a maxi skirt so it doesn’t hide the booties. This length is also really in style right now making the whole outfit a nice modern and effortless look for the season.
Oh how I love my UGGS in this photo below. Most the time I throw mine over a pair of leggings or even pajama pants (gasp!), but this look is sharp and on point. Black blazer, skinny jeans and UGGs. Doesn’t get any more fashion forward than this. I find my fashion inspiration in the most random ways and this particular one I stumbled upon while searching for something else entirely. Sometimes you just need to be drawn to an outfit in order to give it a shot. This is going to be one of those fashion moments for me.
What’s your favorite way to wear booties? Post a comment…I’d love to hear from you. I hope you’ve been inspired to style booties in some new ways this fall and winter…and in spring and summer. Booties are most definitely a year around shoe, one of the main reasons I’m loving them so much more than my tall boots. Besides, if I really want to emulate my namesake “Boots” he is always sporting booties …short, red booties. Now, if I can just find a fashionable bright colored pair, I’ll be golden. In the meantime, there is no other way for me to wrap up this Bootie Call than to channel my inner “Boots”…“I feel so happy when they’re on my feet, we’re best friends…my boots and ME!”
