When I saw this featured image on Nordstrom’s homepage recently, a flutter of excitement raced through my entire body. I was so curious about the company and the designer behind it so I decided to do a bit of research and discovered the company has a very interesting story. Ancient Greek Sandals is co-founded by Christina Martini and Apostolos Porsanidis Kavvadias, and sells more than 80,000 sandals a year through 500 outlets around the world. The brand also has quite the celebrity following (Gisele, Beyonce, Anne Hathaway and Sarah Jessica Parker just to name a few). Ancient Greek Sandals has also been featured in many fashion magazines including Vogue. Wow…quite impressive!
Before moving to Corfu, Martini lived in London with Kavvadias where was a shoe designer for Louis Vuitton then Balenciaga. And Kavvadias was a product designer for the Hermès group. The moved to Corfu in 2010 to start their sandal business and the olive farm, and raise a family.
Now, Ancient Greek Sandals has really taken off, especially being featured on the homepage of a major department store like Nordstrom. One thing in particular that I liked about Martini was how she was quoted in Vogue as being “proud to be part of a loyal creative community that is bringing a bit of a fillip to the still-troubled Greek economy.” She went on to add that “there are lots of people who are re-appreciating our heritage—going back to farming, exporting olive oil, making food, ceramics, remembering all the wonderful things in Greek culture.”
I had so much fun perusing all the designs on Nordstrom’s website (most of the designs can also be purchased in store). Some of my favorite designs include the Eleftheria, Daphnae, and Clio. I also came across several designers who have “knock-offs” of her designs, at a little better price point. The great thing about all these designs is they pair so nicely with so many different outfits – jeans and a tee shirt, maxi dresses, shorts, skirts, and can even make a dressier outfit more casual just be wearing it with a pair of one of these chic and modern pairs of sandals.
